
Queen Latifah was created by Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. The second daughter of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most well-known for her work in social politics, acting skills and talent for rhyme. When she was just 8 years old, old when she was eight, a Muslim friend named her Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah started singing in the choir of the church of Shiloh in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" as the character of Dorothy in a show of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mom was a major influencer. She was very attuned to students and the music. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey, also known as D.J. Mark the 45 King was invited to perform at a school dance.
