
Ormond was born in Epsom (Surrey) as the daughter of Josephine, who is a laboratory technician , as is John Ormond. She is the second child of five children to her parents. She went to private school, first Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School, where early leading performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady began to draw attention. After one year in art college, she transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. She graduated in the year 1988. Ormond first came to prominence on British television in 1989's serial Traffik. The show focused on the illicit heroin trade, from the far East up to Europe. Ormond played the heroin addicted daughter of the main character, an official from the Home Office minister who was engaged in the fight against heroin importation. It was the first time Ormond had a role and was praised by the critics as a success.
